The Strength and Challenges for Promoting Mobility via a Close-Network

Abstract

Three ASEAN universities from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and a Japanese university established a close-network termed the Joint Workshop for Global Engineers in Asia (JWGEA) since 2014. JGWEA organised annual workshops to intensify the interactions of the member universities aiming to promote student and staff exchange. Each year, the workshop is hosted by a member university in a rotation manner where host facilitates the event management, accommodation and local tours for all. Great hospitality is often provided such as free accommodation for students and no registration fee for all. The positive outcomes of this close-network collaboration including the trend and enhancement of student and staff exchange are analysed. Challenges such as imbalanced mobility, the different expectation on the quality of event management and student accommodation are discussed. The sustainability of the collaboration model is analysed with the way forward being shared.
