The Impact of Demographic Transition on Higher Education in Korea

Abstract

Korea has experienced an extraordinary expansion of higher education over the last few decades. However, the population of college-age students is declining rapidly due to a declining birth rate. The demographic transition brings on both challenges and opportunities. Korea ministry of education is taking a bold step to shrink the higher education system by closing some universities and colleges. At the same time, Korea has a plan to expand its international student enrollment to 200,000 by 2023. This presentation will discuss how I’d like to discuss how demographic transition in Korea has an impact on the demand of higher education.
