First Year Spring Admits:  A Cohort for Outbound Mobility

Abstract

Since 2014, the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, located outside of Dublin, have been cooperating on a First Year Spring Admit (FYSA) program that sends UNCW first-time freshmen to Ireland to study for a semester before they attend a single class on the UNCW campus.  This is literally an award-winning and innovative example of what is possible in education abroad; in 2015 UNCW accepted the GoAbroad Innovative New Program award at the national NAFSA conference for this program.  The initial UNCW fall 2014 freshman cohort consisted of 31 students, drawn from the waitlisted names in the traditional spring admit pool.  Instead of deferring admission and finding a community college or another local alternative for the fall term, students are offered the chance to complete 15 hours of fully-articulated and approved courses in Maynooth involving a seamless transfer back to UNCW for the subsequent spring term.
