Current Trends in Higher Education in Australia and their Local, Regional and Global Implications

Abstract

This presentation will outline trends in higher education in Australia, in particular over the last 12 months, and their implications. Key indicators continue to show the increasing internationalization of the sector. Recent domestic policy changes, in particular domestic student funding changes which respond to fiscal pressure on the national budget, will have implications for institutions’ global strategies. Global politics has an increasing impact on public debate about higher education. Research collaboration is becoming an increasingly prominent driver of internationalization across the sector. In this context, the evolution of the Australian PhD, in particular to embed greater university-industry and international collaboration is a significant feature.
